Bringing up young children can be the best time of your life, and it can also be the hardest. I remember juggling childcare and commuting to work as an Engineer. Here's the dilemma, you want to be with your child, you can't bear to be away from your child, but you're not willing to abandon your career. Plus let's face it, most of us have to pay some bills.
Setting up my first business was my way of getting my life back. It was a chance to work on my terms, minimising time away from home and spending as much time as I could with my child. And I'm not alone. We're going through a work from home revolution.
Think it's just parents? Think again. Congested roads and exorbitant house prices are driving people out of the cities. Working from home, in a rural location, is a win-win for most people. Plus even in rural Northumberland, you get a half decent broadband connection...
It's time for a rethink about how we work.
Ways To Start A Business From Home
Unless you have a very understanding boss, (and it’s worth asking), working from home means starting your own business. There’s every chance that what you do at the moment in your day job can be turned into a business idea.
For example, if you currently work in admin, you could exploit the increasing demand for virtual offices. Just think of all those new home-based businesses needing some extra office support.
Rather than completely reinventing yourself, take stock of what you’re already good at. Do you have skills you can translate into a business idea? What about your interests and hobbies? Can you use this knowledge to be creative and come up with an idea that appeals to other people? Something people will pay money for?
These posts will help you find your “start a business from home” idea:
Check Your Idea Works As A Home Business
When you start a business from home, you need to weigh up if your idea is right for your environment. If you have pre-school children it can be challenging. Everyone’s seen this clip:
Young children never understand that “Mummy is on an important conference call”. I mean what’s more important than showing mummy the robot they just made? Right now!
It’s not just children you need to think about, it’s neighbours too. Some will take a dim view of constant deliveries or customers turning up on your doorstep. Plus there may be restrictions on what you can and can’t do from your property.
These are the type of things you need to think about when you put your plan together…
Plan? Did You Say Plan?
Yes. If you seriously want to start a business from home, you need a plan. Not one of those doorstopper, crystal ball gazing plans. Something that’s achievable, and appropriate, and will actually get you to START A BUSINESS FROM HOME.
