There’s this myth going around. It’s the idea you can only make money blogging about blogging. I can see where the impression comes from…
Just look on social media, (especially Pinterest), and you’ll find all those misleading income reports. “How I made $3800 in two days with a new blog”.
Okay I’m exaggerating a bit here but if you want to grab attention come up with a big figure and plaster it across the internet with the words “income report”.
The Reality Of Income Reports
It’s a cheap trick but so effective. I even find myself clicking on them when I know a) it won’t be their first blog or b) the figures won’t include refunds or c) they don’t include advertising costs and other expenditure…
That doesn’t mean you can’t make money blogging about blogging but it’s definitely NOT the only way to make money online.
My first blog was for my business selling outdoor clothing. It’s easy driving traffic to a site when you’re tapping into a shared passion.
There are people who live to climb, walk and run and all I had to do was share motivational posts about loving the outdoors and how to get fitter. These posts were easy to write because I was writing about my own interests.
The Types Of Blogs That Make Money
I could give you a list and it’s true some topics work better than others. There are a few ideas in this post:
But a list of blog topics is misleading. It could send you off in completely the wrong direction, missing out on your winning idea.
I found a blog about Kawaii drawings this morning. Those cute, irresistible Japanese characters. Here’s the link (but be warned – you may get the drawing bug):
A blog about drawing Japanese characters? Not on your normal money making topics list! I can’t divulge the details, but the artist, Tatyana Deniz, launched her first course a few months ago and it’s been a BIG success.
Finding Your Money Making Blog Idea
There are a few ways to go about this:
#1 Spend time testing your money making idea.
Ideally you should test out every business idea. Spend time hanging out on forums, Reddit and FaceBook groups making sure that whatever money making idea you’ve come up with is a winner.
You can ask people what they might pay for products, check out their dreams and desires, basically do a shed load of research and maybe you’ll get it right. Or you can just wing it.
Am I being irresponsible suggesting that you wing it? Maybe, maybe not. I’ve come across a lot of bloggers who spent months, years even, testing out their money making ideas.
Did it mean they were successful? Not really. Some of them were big fat failures. They wasted a lot of time launching their blog and then failed. Sometimes it’s best just to start and learn along the way.
#2 Pick a blog topic you enjoy.
This comes with a caveat or two – it has to be a blog topic with an audience and it has to be a topic that will make money.
This post will give you some ideas of the best way to find your topic:
There’s a myth that your topic has to be unique. It’s not true. You just need your own angle. There’s far more chance you’ll make money blogging about a subject where other people are already making money.
Yes there will be competition but competition is way better than no interest.
#3 Start a broad general blog and niche down when you know what your readers want.
This method would probably have lovers of idea testing choking on their soup. Just start a blog and see what happens!!!
It’s not a completely dumb idea.
There are some very successful lifestyle blogs and mom blogs that started with this approach.
There is, however, one big rule. You need to know who you are writing for.
The trick is to visualize your typical reader. What are their likes and dislikes, fashion tastes, food tastes, lifestyle choices. Then go write your posts and try to nail it.
Feedback what works and adjust. Focus in on the topics your readers love. In time your blog may well develop a narrower focus.
The downside is that broad topic blogs can be far harder to rank well in search engines. That’s my proviso but it doesn’t mean a general topic blog can’t be successful.
Conclusion – Just Start A Blog
The idea that only blogs about blogging make money is well and truly a myth. Blogging about something you love, you’re knowledgeable about and has an audience is a great way to start a blog.
Getting stuck in testing an idea, or spending months over-thinking your blog is a real waste of time. Is far better to start something than never start at all.
There’s nothing wrong with a broad blog topic – just make sure you focus on your readers. You’ll soon discover which of your posts are popular.
