Use Social Media To Grow Your Blog
This is the default go to option when someone starts a blog. Social media can be extremely successful at generating traffic. It can also be the easiest method when you’re starting out.
The trick is to find the right social media platform. By all means sign up for every platform using your blog name but don’t even think about using them all. Start with one or two at most. It’s better to conquer one platform than have a half baked attempt at several. The question is which one?
This is key to making your choice. You need to know where your customers hang out and what platform fits your brand. If you’re starting a fashion blog aimed at young women, Instagram will be a top choice…not so much if the clothing is aimed at over 60’s.
Just because your customers are using a platform doesn’t mean its your best source of traffic. FaceBook is a good example of this. Unless you spend money on adverts, it’s almost impossible to use FaceBook to generate traffic. The chances of anyone seeing posts on your business page are practically zilch (even if they follow you).
By comparison, Pinterest is currently a much better bet, particularly if your audience is female. It’s a far smaller platform but actively helps bloggers grow their followers. All you have to do is create beautiful pins.
Pinterest is making a huge difference to my new lifestyle blog. Topics such as yoga and running are an excellent fit for the Pinterest audience.
Optimize And Grow Your Blog With Search Engine Traffic
When anyone talks about search engines they always mean Google. Google dominates with around 90% of traffic. When you’re starting out, Google is the only search engine you need to think about.
It takes time to rank on the first few pages of Google search results. Your blog needs to build credibility through high-quality content, consistent visitors and relevant links from other websites to your site. Setting up your blog the right way from day one will make all the difference.
If it’s so difficult to grow blog traffic with Google why bother?
The idea that it’s difficult to rank on Google is a myth. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can be broken down into easy steps. Organic traffic from Google is free and your visitors will be searching for your content, not just flicking absent-mindedly through their social media feed.
Google does make regular changes to their algorithm (the way the search engine decides which websites rank in the top results). Yet, unlike social media platforms, Google won’t close your account for no (apparent) reason or suddenly make it impossible to drive traffic to your site. Yes make the most of social media for website traffic but don’t forget about Google.
Keep On Hustling To Grow Your Blog Faster
When starting a blog it’s important to hustle. There’s a whole slew of different options you can try; using Reddit and forums, posting on Medium, commenting on other blogs…
Growth doesn’t happen overnight. It’s often the result of a lot of small steps and the first year is the hardest. Yet, the good news is, there are lots of ways to generate income without a huge amount of traffic.
