It’s so exciting! You’ve just written your first posts and hit Publish. Your blog has officially launched. You sit back and wait for visitors, blog comments, people getting in touch… What happens? Crickets…It’s time to generate traffic.
Use social media to generate traffic.
This is the default go to option when someone starts a blog. Social media can be extremely successful at generating traffic. It can also be the easiest method when you’re starting out.
The trick is to find the right social media platform. By all means sign up for every platform using your blog name but don’t even think about using them all. Start with one or two at most. It’s better to conquer one platform than have a half baked attempt at several. The question is which one?
Which social media platforms are your customers using?
This is key to making your choice. You need to know where your customers hang out and what platform fits your brand. If you’re starting a fashion blog aimed at young women, Instagram will be a top choice…not so much if the clothing is aimed at over 60’s.
Just because your customers are using a platform doesn’t mean
By comparison, Pinterest is currently a much better bet, particularly if your audience is female. It’s a far smaller platform but actively helps bloggers grow their followers. All you have to do is create beautiful pins. Here’s my experience of building followers on Pinterest:
Optimise your blog for search engines.
When anyone talks about search engines they always mean Google. Google dominates with around 90% of traffic. When you’re starting out,Google is the only search engine you need to think about.
Optimising your blog for Google is playing the long game…
It takes time to rank on the first few pages of Google search results. Your blog needs to build credibility through high-quality content, consistent visitors and relevant links from other websites to your site. Setting up your blog the right way from day one will make all the difference.
If it’s so difficult why bother?
The idea that it’s difficult to rank on Google is a myth. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) can be broken down into easy steps. Organic traffic from Google is free and your visitors will be searching for your content, not just flicking absent-mindedly through their social media feed.
Google does make regular changes to their algorithm (the way the search engine decides which websites rank in the top results). But, unlike social media platforms, Google won’t close your account for no (apparent) reason or suddenly make it impossible to drive traffic to your site. Yes make the most of social media but don’t forget about Google.
Keep on hustling
When starting a blog it’s important to hustle. There’s a whole slew of different options you can try; guest blogging, using forums, posting on Medium, commenting on other blogs…
Traffic doesn’t happen overnight. It’s often the result of a lot of small steps and the first year is the hardest. Yet, the good news is, it doesn’t take a huge amount of traffic to generate income. All you need to do is use your conversion focused blog to capture newsletter followers. If you build followers you’re ready to start selling…
